    Description

In October 2019, we (Breathe 4ALS) held the most wonderful, successful gala in our town of Westport. As another means to raise money, we showcased one of Jonathan’s prized photojournalistic works. Many of those who attended expressed interest in Jonathan’s collection.

Recently, we’ve been at a loss for how to keep the momentum alive for our newly established foundation. Then, our dear friend had an idea to create a coffee table book showcasing the scale of Jonathan’s work as a means of fundraising.

Jonathan’s vast series of documentary style photography brings to life the juxtaposition of darkness and controversy flecked with humor and surprise. This fusion was always the trademark of Jonathan’s overall artistic approach. Before becoming a NYT photojournalist, Jonathan received his Masters at the Kunsthochschule fuer Medien, Koeln, Germany (KHM), and went on to direct and produce international documentaries and short films.

In his final days, Jonathan was completely dependent for everything. He could not write, speak, move his limbs and often choked. Jonathan even ate and drank via a feeding tube and had trouble getting comfortable when he slept, but he still smiled and maintained a healthy interest in world events.
